Sexual Health
When was the last time your health care practitioner asked about your sex life? When you come to pelvic floor physical therapy, we talk about sexual health because we believe it is very important to human health. Unfortunately, most people get very little to no education about this and many feel shame, embarrassment, and frustration and don’t know what to do.
Our goal is to provide a safe space for all gender and sexuality and allow people to ask questions, discuss concerns, and get the help they need. There’s no such thing as TMI! That being said, we also understand that this is not a subject everyone is comfortable talking about. You only have to share and talk about things you are comfortable with and we are here to support you.
Here are some of the following problems that people can get help for with pelvic floor physical therapy:
Dyspareunia: pain with initial penetration or pain with deep thrusting
Vaginismus: pain with insertion of anything in the vagina, including tampons
Painful OBGYN/pelvic examinations
Postpartum painful sex
Hip or groin pain associated with sexual activity
Pain with orgasm (or after an orgasm)
Difficulty or inability to have an orgasm or weak orgasm
Bladder leakage during orgasm/ejaculation
Pain after sexual activity
PGAD: persistent genital arousal disorder
A multidiciplinary approach including pelvic floor physical therapy can be very helpful. Treatment options include manual therapy, pelvic floor relaxation exercises, education, behavioral strategies, self management strategies, home exercise program, pain science education, and appropriate referrals to complementary professions/services.
